Studio Art: Modern Sculpture in Plaster

Students are invited to cast, carve and wet-sand their own abstract modern sculpture based on the works of Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore and Constantine Brancusi. Student are introduced to concepts in art such as form, line, the relationships between positive and negative space and balance. They are asked to draw the works of important artists as well as their own evolving pieces as a way to be reflective about their own art making. Students also participate in guided group discussion about the work of important modern sculptors, their own work and that of their peers.

Planning and Process

Students are invited to research sketch and write during the planning stages of the project. They also learn to use a variety of sculpture tools while being guided through the process.

Finished Work

Students wet-sand their plaster sculpture to a polished finish. They learn to consider their piece from all angles while being encouraged to relate what they see at each stage of the process to important concepts in art like symmetry/asymmetry, form, line, positive/negative space and balance.
