Ceramics 2: Personal Narrative-Sculptural Vessel
Students are invited to create coil built, sculptural vessels that address elements and principals of art. Students will participate in guided discussion about symmetry/asymmetry, gesture, movement, balance and the figure as these concepts relate to the work of ceramic artists Magdalene Odundo. Students learn advanced coil building techniques, paddling and ribbing as well as carving using a variety of tools. Each piece also incorporates personal narrative imagery using the Sgraffito (scratch through) technique. They will participate in guided discussion about contemporary ceramic artists Mathew Metz, Heesoo Lee and Shoko Teruyama who employ this technique in their work.
Imagery
Students participate in guided discussions about contemporary and historical ceramic work. They develop their own personal narrative in response to questions and create thumbnail sketches. These images are carved into the vessels using a variety of drawing and transfer techniques.
